When it comes to adult beverages, the North Fork of Long Island is best-known for wine. But vintners aren’t the only craftspeople you’ll find working in this realm. Take Matchbook Distilling Co., for example, a neighbor of ours here in Greenport, New York.

As a guest of The Menhaden, you’ll find yourself only a few blocks away from this unique house of spirits, well worth visiting while enjoying our boutique hospitality on Front Street!

Matchbook Distilling Company: Bespoke Bottles & Barrels

Established in 2017, Matchbook Distilling Company specializes in exclusive, bespoke production of spirits made in everything from bottle to barrel quantity for a wide range of clients and occasions.

American-made distilling equipment anchors proceedings at the facility, located just a half-mile from The Menhaden at 230 Corwin Street. Grains are milled and water remineralized on-site, and a plethora of local and regional ingredients contribute prominently to the botanicals used—not least farm-grown herbs and produce from the North Fork.

Indeed, in placing emphasis on the highest-quality ingredients, Matchbook celebrates the deep connections between the agricultural and distilling industries, and honors the productivity of the land itself in every creation: a really admirable focus going right back to the very fertility of the soil.

There’s some rich distilling history embodied in Matchbook’s operations: One of its co-founders, Leslie Merinoff, claims among her direct forebears none other than Hiram Walker, the 19th-century industrialist well known for founding the Canadian Club whisky brand.

The Create Your Own Gin Experience at Matchbook Distillery

Besides working closely with its clients to formulate custom, limited-release bottlings, Matchbook offers guests a hands-on introduction to the art and science of distilling. By appointment, you can partake in the distillery’s Create Your Own Gin Experience, offered on Saturday afternoons.

The experience kicks off with a suitably inspiring cocktail and a distillery tour, before you roll up your sleeves and scheme up an utterly unique signature blend. A 750mL bottle of that one-of-a-kind blend of yours goes home with you.
