Family Getaways on North Fork

June 14, 2023

The holidays are over, and after all of that excitement, hustle-and-bustle, and (let’s face it) stress, it’s time to relax and unwind! You won’t find a better place for doing just that than The Menhaden here on the North Fork of Long Island.

We’d love to welcome you and your family for a winter visit at our boutique 16-room hotel in the heart of Greenport Village. We not only supply the perfect accommodations for family groups (including the option of connecting rooms): We also put a host of fun and fascinating activities and experiences at your collective fingertips.

Here are just a few of the family-friendly options in our neck of the woods!

Go Ice Skating Together

Lace up those skates and hit up one of the local ice-skating rinks for some classic wintertime family delights. With boutique lodgings at The Menhaden, you’ll find yourself just a hop, skip, and a jump from the Village of Greenport’s very own Ice Skating Rink at Mitchell Park.

Explore the Long Island Aquarium

Nab up-close looks at underwater marvels—from local depths to the faraway tropics—at the excellent Long Island Aquarium (431 E. Main St., Riverhead, NY), which has been delighting young and old visitors alike since 2000.

Exhibits here include Amazon Rainforest, home to huge freshwater fish such as pacus, arowanas, and river stingrays; Local Rocky Shores, a 2,000-gallon tank filled with waters from Long Island’s Shinnecock Bay and hosting native kelp and other habitats; and the astounding Lost City of Atlantis Shark Habitat, cruised by locally obtained sand tiger sharks as well as nurse sharks, moray eels, Queensland groupers, and other impressive critters. (Consider a Shark Dive here!) Outside, meanwhile, you can get to know the charming inhabitants of Penguin Pavilion and Sea Lion Coliseum.

Stroll Local Beaches

Stellar North Fork beaches await within shouting distance of your Menhaden guest room, and their exquisite seasonal beauty and ample elbow room during wintertime make them extra-attractive.

Take a stroll or soak up the sunset at (for example) Fifth Street BeachOrient Beach, or 67 Steps Beach (the location, incidentally, for one of our popular Menhaden Bespoke Experiences).

Gaze to the Heavens at the Cutler Observatory

We’re lucky to have Long Island’s oldest public astronomical observatory nearby: the Cutler Institute & Observatory (1115 Main Bayview Rd, Southold, NY). Kids—and grownups, too—will love exploring the night skies through high-power telescopes during the Observatory’s guided stargazing events on Saturday evenings.

Gaze to the Heavens at the Cutler Observatory

Explore local Long Island natural areas while glimpsing and hearing their feathered denizens—from tiny songbirds to tough winter seabirds and raptors—via one of the guided birdwatching hikes offered by the North Fork Audubon Society, including Friday Morning Birders events.
