Among the especially long-standing North Work wineries is Paumanok Vineyards (1074 Main Road, Aquebogue, NY), established back in 1983. Its small-batch production—less than 12,000 cases a year—draws from the Chardonnay, Riesling, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chenin Blanc vines on the estate. Boasting a tasting room and outdoor deck, Paumanok is open daily from 11 AM to 5 PM.

Then there’s Sparkling Pointe Vineyard (39750 County Road 48, Southold, NY), where you can sample its highly rated wines in an elegant Grand Tasting House with table service as well as out on the lawn and winery terrace. Macari Vineyards (locations in Mattituck and Cutahogue) is another must-visit, with an absolutely gorgeous tasting room on its roughly 500-acre Mattituck vineyard and farm.

Other excellent options within easy reach of The Menhaden include The Old Field Vineyards (59600 Main Road, Southold, NY), the multigenerational family operations of which include a mother/daughter winemaking duo, and Suhru Wines (28735 Main Road, Cutahogue, NY), another family-owned outfit that was founded in 2008 and opens its Tasting House and Wine Garden Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 6 PM.
